My name is Mya Burghardt and I am a grade 11 student at Princess Margaret Secondary School. This website is the product of my English First Peoples 12 final inquiry project. The purpose of this project was to explore reconciliation with Indigenous people in Canada through a particular area of interest of the student. I chose to deepen my understanding on issues involving Indigenous people throughout Canada’s healthcare system and what reconciliation looks like for this topic. The medical field has been a growing interest of mine over the years. Both of my parents' professions are in this field, my dad a dentist and my mom a nurse. They ultimately inspired me to explore a future career in the medical field and research this topic for my inquiry project.

ABOUTDespite what you may think, Canada’s healthcare system is flawed and fails to help all Canadians equally. Whether it be a lack of access to quality healthcare or substandard and biased treatment, Indigenous people struggle to receive the same fair and equal care as the rest of Canadians. Throughout this website there is information regarding Canada’s history and healthcare system in relation to its Indigenous population. The information provided corresponds to numbers 18, 19, and 23 of Canada’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action outlined under health related disparities.
